A blu ray disc is an optical storage device that is designed to be more efficient than the standard DVD format. It is mainly used for the storage of high definition video that even includes Playstation 3 video games and can store up to twenty five gigabytes on a single layer disc. The Blu Ray Disc has the same physical dimensions as the standard CDs and DVDs.

It got its name from the blue violet laser that is reading the data from the disc. It uses a shorter wavelength for faster data transmissions and stores up to six times more data than the standard DVDs and CDs.
Developed by the Blu Ray Disc Association it has reached a popularity that includes 1500 Blu Ray disc titles in Australia and 2500 in both United States and Canada. It was conceptualized because during the inception of High Definition TV sets, there was no way to store High Definition video that will complement the TV.
Shuji Nakamura had invented the blue laser diode that would enable storage with a higher density. Currently, the blu ray disc is supported by over two hundred different world leaders in the consumer electronics industry as well as music companies and gaming companies.
The blu ray disc format has also gotten support from all Hollywood studios as well as hundreds of smaller film making studios. And with its booming popularity, the over all manufacturing cost of a blu ray disc will be no more costly as creating a DVD. As production costs fall due to the huge demand.
The Blu ray disc also has several advantages over a standard DVD in terms of storage capacity giving users more storage space for additional features as well as content. And the high definition feature of a blu ray disc gives up to five times the amount of detail than the standard DVD. It also offers rewriting, recording and playback in all high definition resolutions and audio. There are also plans to make the blu ray disc available for personal computers. And since VCRs do not support High Definition programming, customers would soon have to replace their VCRS with a blu ray disc compatible player. There are blu ray disc recorders that are available for those who do not want to record in high definition.
Blu ray recorders allow the consumers to record their videos without eating up lots of hard drive space. And there is no need to worry about your existing DVD collection becoming obsolete as the TV and video manufacturers who are currently introducing the blu ray disc have already made it possible for standard DVDs and CDs to be compatible with the blu ray disc.
They have even come up with a way to upscale the standard DVDs so the images will look even better. So for the meantime, the Blu Ray disc format and the standard DVD format would have to exist in the market together until the High Definition TV technology has finally become widespread.
